Why do i have to always download and install game data for each of my games on ps3?

I got a ps3 yesterday and when I put in borderlands and nfs: shift they had to download some stuff and install it. why does this happed? shouldnt everything be on the disc? i just

Ok, whenever I try to download a patch for a game, it craps out on me at the very end when it is almost done. This does not happen with other file types. I think it might have
um this hapend to me before try restalling it.
